"BC Partners to Buy Turkey's Migros for US$3.2 Billion" (Middle East)

London-based buyout firm BC Partners (formerly Baring Capital Investors) has agreed to acquire Turkey's largest supermarket chain, Migros Turk, for about US$3.2 billion. The transaction includes the acquisition of Koc Holding's 51 percent stake in Migros for US$1.7 billion. Migros operates 961 stores in Turkey and neighboring countries. Turkey has 17 supermarkets per million people, compared to the European Union's 150. The takeover is the first by BC Partners in Turkey and the largest to date in the country, topping the acquisition of shipping company U.N. Ro-Ro Isletmeleri by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. in October for US$1.3 billion.

"Busby Minorities Give Thumbs Up for Ethos Offer" (Africa)

Ethos Private Equity has received approval from minority shareholders to acquire a 32 percent stake in brands distributor House of Busby of South Africa for about US$166.3 million. Busby has the sole trading rights to the local Nine West and Mango chains. Ethos acquired a stake in Tiger Automotive of South Africa earlier in the year.

"Lombard to Invest in Kland" (Asia)

U.S.-based private equity firm Lombard Investments will acquire a nearly 20 percent stake in Thai residential property developer Krungthep Land (Kland) through the purchase of about US$19.6 million in convertible debentures. The investment will be made through the US$234 million Lombard Asia III Fund. Lombard has made 19 investments in Thailand through its Asia I and II funds, including Thai Frozen Products, Central Pattana, Somboon Advance Technology, Ticon Industrial Connection, and S&P Syndicate.

"SHUAA Acquires Stake in Orion Holding" (Middle East)

Dubai-based SHUAA Capital and Orion Holding Overseas, a UAE-based holding company, have acquired a 20 percent stake in Dubai-based financial services firm Orion Holding and controlling stakes in five Orion Brokers subsidiaries in a transaction valued at US$52.5 million. Orion Brokers was a fully owned subsidiary of Orion Holding.

U.S.-based private equity firm Emerging Capital Partners (ECP) has realized an average return of three times its initial investment on its stakes in African companies. Since 1999, the firm has invested in 48 companies in about 30 different countries and exited from 18. Among its most successful investments were pan-African mobile phone company CelTel and Togo-based banking group Ecobank.

"U.S. Private Equity Firm to Buy PdVSA's Bahamas Oil Terminal" (Latin America and the Caribbean)

U.S.-based private equity firm First Reserve has agreed to acquire Bahamas Oil Refining from Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PdVSA) for an undisclosed sum. When PdVSA first confirmed its intent last November to sell the oil terminal, located in Freeport, it reportedly received a US$800 million offer.

"AirAsia X to Sell 20 Percent Stake to Japan's Orix, Bahrain Fund" (Asia)

Budget carrier AirAsia X of Malaysia has agreed to sell a 20 percent stake to Orix Group of Japan and Bahrain's Perigon Capital, each of which will acquire a 10 percent share, for US$75 million. AirAsia X was launched in January 2007 and is affiliated with AirAsia and Virgin Blue.

Banco do Brasil Investimentos and Banif SGPS SA of Portugal have reportedly created a US$344 million private equity fund aimed at investments in Brazil. The fund will seek minority stakes in companies planning on selling shares on the stock market.

"Arca Capital Bohemia Buys Online Store Kasa.cz" (Central and Eastern Europe and Russia)

Arca Capital Bohemia has acquired the Czech Republic's second largest online portal, Kasa.cz. In December, U.S. private equity firm Warburg Pincus acquired a majority stake in Centrum.cz. Warburg is currently in talks to acquire Atlas.cz as well. Arca Capital Bohemia is a unit of U.K.-based venture capital firm Arca Capital.

"ADIC and UBS Join Forces to Create a MENA Infrastructure Fund" (Middle East)

The Abu Dhabi Investment Company and UBS Global Asset Management have formed a 50/50 venture to establish a US$500 million fund aimed at infrastructure investments in the Middle East and North Africa. The fund will focus on investments in utilities, transport, social, and energy related infrastructure works.
