Emerging Capital Partners, a private equity firm focused on investments in Africa, has made a US$47.3 million investment in Societe d'Articles Hygieniques, Tunisia's leading personal care company and producer of absorbent hygiene products. The investment was made through ECP Africa Fund II and the ECP MENA Growth Fund.

U.K.-based private equity fund of funds CDC Group has committed US$650 million to a series of emerging markets funds launched by Actis. Actis Emerging Markets 3 comprises a global fund and four regional funds—aimed at Africa, South Asia, China, and Latin America.

"Shuaa Partners Raising US$650 Million Hospitality Fund" (Middle East)

Shuaa Partners, the private equity unit of Dubai-based investment bank Shuaa Capital, is raising a US$650 million hospitality fund that intends to spend US$500 million of the total on building or acquiring a chain of hotels across Saudi Arabia. Shuaa entered the Saudi and Qatari markets last year and is considering investment options in Kuwait. It says it may launch another private equity fund later in 2008.

"Private Equity Group Invests in Indian Mobile Operator" (Asia)

Private equity group Providence Equity Partners has acquired a 20 percent stake in Aditya Birla Telecom (ABTL), a subsidiary of India's Idea Cellular, for US$640 million. In 2006, Providence invested US$400 million in Idea Celllular. ABTL owns the telecom mobile license in the eastern states of Bihar and Jharkhand and will hold a 16 percent stake in Indus Towers, Idea's tower subsidiary, co-owned by Vodafone Essar and Bharti Airtel.

"Lion Capital to Go for Russian Alcohol" (Central and Eastern Europe and Russia)

U.K.-based private equity firm Lion Capital has agreed to acquire a majority stake in Russian Alcohol Group from Russia-based investment company Industrial Investors. Also investing in Russian Alcohol will be Central European Distribution Corporation (CEDC), a major vodka producer in Poland and Russia, and Goldman Sachs. Though Lion Capital has not disclosed the financial details of its acquisition, CEDC will invest US$156.5 million for a 40 percent stake, according to a statement from CEDC.

Brazil-based private equity firm DGF has raised US$75 million out of a targeted US$200 million for its Terra Viva Equity Fund, which will primarily target Brazil's ethanol industry. Separately, Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) is seeking investors for its Fundo Brasil Sustentabilidade, which is targeting between US$150 million and US$250 million in committed capital and will target Brazil's renewable power sector, including ethanol.

Dubai Capital Group, a subsidiary of state-owned conglomerate Dubai Holding, has acquired a 49 percent stake in Egyptian glass maker Sphinx Glass Company for US$199 million. Sphinx Glass is a wholly owned subsidiary of GlassWorks, a company established by Egypt-based private equity firm Citadel Capital and other regional investors.
