"South African Firms Race to Raise Continent's Largest Fund" (Africa)

South Africa-based private equity firms Ethos and Brait are poised to begin fundraising for new African funds, both targeting about US$1.5 billion in committed capital. Last year, sub-Saharan resources buyout specialist Pamodzi raised US$1.3 billion for the largest fund to date solely dedicated to Africa. In 2006, Brait raised a US$880 million fund and Ethos a US$750 million fund. Ethos for one will consider options beyond its base in South Africa, looking to invest about 30 percent in other nations. It made its first investment outside of South Africa earlier this year as part of a consortium that invested US$130 million in Nigeria-based Oceanic Bank.

"Actis Sells Stake in Shunda Holdings of China" (Asia)

Private equity firm Actis and Waichun Investment Fund have sold a minority stake in China-based maker of silicon wafers Shunda Holdings for US$98.9 million to solar cell maker Suntech Power Holdings of China. Shunda is building a polysilicon plant in China's Jiangsu province.

"Aureos Invests in Mexican Leasing" (Latin America and the Caribbean)

Aureos Capital has invested US$5 million in Mexican transportation equipment leasing company Analistas de Recursos Globales, taking a controlling stake in the company. The investment was made through Aureos Latin America Fund (ALAF), which is in the process of finalizing its second closing toward a target of US$ 300 million. ALAF is the largest fund ever raised by Aureos and has now made two investments since its launch in 2007, targeting small and midsize companies in Central America, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru.

"Baring Asia Picks Up 12 Percent of Retail Brokerage Sharekhan" (Asia)

Baring Asia has acquired a 12 percent stake in Mumbai-based retail brokerage Sharekhan. Ten percent of the stake was acquired from Citigroup Venture Capital International, which last year acquired a 76 percent stake in Sharekhan along with India-based IDFC from a group of private equity firms led by General Atlantic.

"Bahrain's Arbah Global Unveils Nanotechnology Fund" (Middle East)

Bahrain-based Arbah Global, the investment arm of Arbah Capital, has launched the US$100 million Arbah Nanotechnology Fund. The Shariah-compliant fund will seek to capitalize on investments in the nanotechnology market, which is expected to grow to US$1.2 trillion worldwide by 2015.

"Nedbank Capital Buys Boart Longyear's Mining Capital Equipment Unit" (Africa)

South Africa-based Nedbank Capital, the private equity unit of banking group Nedbank, and black economic empowerment group Matasis Investment Holdings have acquired the South Africa-based mining capital equipment division of Boart Longyear. Aard Mining Equipment is a manufacturer and marketer of low-profile drilling, grading and hauling machinery for the mining industry.

"Da Vinci Raises US$110 Million for Ex-Soviet Fund" (Central and Eastern Europe and Russia)

The Da Vinci CIS Private Sector Growth Fund has raised US$110 million for investments in the Commonwealth of Independent States. The fund is the first investment entity to join the London Stock Exchange's new Specialist Fund Market.

"Axis PE Achieves 1st Close of Infrastructure Fund" (Asia)

Axis PE, a unit of Axis Bank of India, has announced the first close of its Axis Infrastructure Fund with US$150 million in committed capital. The fund has a target of between US$500 million and US$600 million. Axis PE has already committed more than half of the fund in India's infrastructure and facilitating companies with a focus on railways, irrigation, oil and gas pipeline development, water supply and sanitation and the development of hotels and resorts.

"Polish Private Equity Fund to Buy PharmaSwiss Stake" (Central and Eastern Europe and Russia)

Poland-based private equity firm Enterprise Investors has signed an agreement to acquire a 13 percent stake in PharmaSwiss, a distributor of pharmaceuticals throughout Central and Eastern Europe, for US$54.8 million. The acquisition was made through Polish Enterprise Fund VI. PharmaSwiss has plans to enter the Russian and Turkish markets within the next few years.

"Africa Pioneers in Buyout Initiative" (Africa)

Miles Morland, who launched Blakeney Management to invest in new African stock exchanges in the early 1990s, and Runa Alam, formerly of buyout firm Kingdom Zephyr, have raised EUR230 million toward a targeted EUR400 million for Development Partners International, a private equity venture that will focus on countries emerging from conflict in Africa. The anchor investor in the new venture is Dubai Group, the investment arm of Dubai Holdings.

"CapMan to Acquire Russian Private Equity Firm" (Central and Eastern Europe and Russia)

Finland-based private equity firm CapMan will acquire Moscow-based buyout firm Norum for up to EUR9 million. Norum is currently raising Norum Russia Fund III, which has raised EUR88 million to date toward a goal of EUR150 million to EUR200 million. Norum targets small to midsize companies in Russia's consumer goods and services, manufacturing, telecommunications, transportation, financial services and media sectors. The fund will be renamed CapMan Russia Fund following the acquisition.
