"China Equity Fund to Invest US$300 Mln in Africa"

The China-Africa Development Fund will invest approximately US$300 million in Africa in 2008. The fund, which is backed by the China Development Bank, was formed in 2007 to invest in African agriculture, manufacturing, natural resources, and infrastructure development. The fund has invested US$60 million to date in enterprises including an Ethiopian glass factory and a power station in Ghana.

"Icon Enters Financial Services with Delta Bank Deal"

Moscow-based Icon Private Equity acquired a 49 percent stake of Ukraine's Delta Bank for a reported US$350 million. The deal is the first financial services deal for Icon, which plans to consolidate regional banks in Ukraine. The Icon Private Equity Fund, a direct investment fund with US$1 billion in capital, was launched in September 2007.

"CDC to Invest in Indian Property"

UK-based private equity firm CDC Group will invest US$250 million in three Indian infrastructure and real estate funds. The firm will invest US$100 million in IDFC's India infrastructure fund, US$100 million in the Actis India Real Estate Fund and US$50 million in Kotak India Realty Fund. The three funds plan to raise a combined US$1.6 billion for infrastructure and real estate investments in India.

"Norske Skog Sells South Korean Paper Mills for US$835 Million to Cut Debt"

Morgan Stanley Private Equity Asia and Shinhan Private Equity teamed up to purchase two South Korean paper mills from Norwegian papermaker Norske Skog for US$835 million. Norske Skog will receive US$622 million in cash, while the two private equity firms will assume all related debt and liabilities. The deal is expected to close by early August.

"UAE's Alnair to Raise Stake in Kazkommertsbank to 25 Percent"

UAE-based private-equity fund AO Alnair Capital Holding will buy 17.1 percent of shares in Kazakhstan's Kazkommertsbank for an undisclosed amount. The fund, which is backed by Sheik Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi, will hold a 25 percent stake in the former Soviet republic's second largest lender after the deal goes through.

"IGNIA Raises US$25 Million Debt Financing from Inter-American Development Bank"

The Board of the Inter-American Development Bank approved US$25 million in debt financing for IGNIA Fund I, Latin America's first social venture capital fund. The fund previously closed on US$20.6 million in equity commitments. The fund will make equity investments in portfolio companies in the region.

The African Enterprise Challenge Fund, a US$50 million venture capital fund managed by KPMG, was launched to invest in agri-business and rural financial services. The fund will offer grants or loans of up to US$1.5 million to medium and large agri-businesses. The first six projects are expected to receive financing by September.
