Emerging Markets Private Equity Fundraising on Course to Beat 2007 Totals: US$35 Billion Raised through June 2008

EMPEA's just-released fundraising statistics for the first six months of 2008 reveal that EM PE funds are on track to beat 2007 totals. Led by Emerging Asia, 104 funds dedicated to investments in emerging markets raised more than US$35 billion in capital in the first half of 2008, a 68% increase over the amount raised during the same period in 2007. "Abraaj Launches Biggest Middle East Buyout Fund" (Middle East)

Dubai-based private equity firm Abraaj Capital has launched fundraising for its third buyout fund targeting investments in the Middle East and North Africa, this time aiming to raise US$4 billion. The size of the third fund would be eight times larger than Abraaj's previous buyout fund, which closed with US$500 million in 2005. Abraaj's first buyout fund closed in 2003 with US$116 million in committed capital.

"ECP, Actis Exit Investment in Nigerian Telecom Company Starcomms" (Africa)

Emerging Capital Partners (ECP) and Actis have exited their investment in Starcomms, Nigeria's fourth largest telecom operator with some 1.5 million subscribers. The exit was achieved through a US$273 million private placement of the company's shares, which have been listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. The transaction generated ECP a 2.9 return on its initial investment, made in 2005 through the AIG African Infrastructure Fund. Separately, Actis has also partially divested its 20.5 percent stake in food conglomerate UAC of Nigeria (UACN), acquired in 2004.

"CDC to Invest US$185 Million in 6 India Focused Private Equity Funds" (Asia)

U.K.-based CDC Group will invest US$185 million in six private equity funds focused on India, including a US$50 million commitment for Baring India Private Equity Fund III and a similar commitment to the New Silk Route Private Equity Asia Fund. Overall, the six private equity funds to which CDC has pledged a commitment are expected to raise a total of over US$2.47 billion for investments in India.

"Swicorp Takes Stake in Turkey Carpet Firm" (Middle East)

Saudi Arabia-based private equity firm Swicorp has acquired a majority stake in Step, a leading carpet manufacturer and retailer in Turkey. The transaction marks Swicorp's first private equity investment in Turkey.

"GVFL Further Invest in Sahajanand Laser Technology" (Asia)
GVFL Limited (07/28/08)

India-based venture capital firm GVFL Limited has invested a further US$2.6 million in Sahajanand Laser Technology Limited, a leading Indian maker of laser systems for the diamond industry. The investment was made through the US$15 million SME Technology Venture Fund. In October 2007, GVFL made its initial investment in Sahajanand, a commitment now valued at around US$1 million, through its Gujarat IT Fund.

"East Capital's Fund Acquires Stake in Bank in Kamchatka" (Central and Eastern Europe and Russia)

East Capital Private Equity has acquired a 16.43 percent stake in Kamchatprombank, based in the Kamchatka region of the Russian Far East, for EUR2.85 million. The investment was made though the East Capital Financials Fund, a EUR500 million fund focused on investments in the financial sectors of Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States.

"Wartsila, Manara Form Power Sector JV With Focus on Islamic Countries" (Middle East)

The Manara Consortium, composed of four Middle Eastern investment groups that together with private equity firm 3i Group have established the Manara Infrastructure Fund (MIF), has partnered with engineering company Wartsila of Finland to create a joint venture that aims to become the leading developer of decentralized independent power projects in Islamic countries. The joint venture, called Manara Wartsila Power, will operate out of Bahrain and initially focus on investments in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. MIF was created to invest in infrastructure and infrastructure-related sectors in the Islamic world.

South Africa-based venture capital firm Mion has acquired South African retailer of schoolbooks Afribooks from Indiza Capital for about US$9 million. Afribooks currently has a presence in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and Bloemfontein.

Macquarie Group of Australia and Russia's Renaissance Capital are jointly raising an infrastructure fund aimed at investments in the Commonwealth of Independent States. The fund is targeting commitments of US$1.5 billion and has already raised US$750 million.

"EI Buys Romanian Building Materials Group" (Central and Eastern Europe and Russia)

Poland-based private equity firm Enterprise Investors has acquired a majority stake in Simcor Group, a Romanian building materials producer composed of seven companies, in a transaction valued at EUR53 million. The acquisition was made through Macon Deva, another construction materials producer in Romania, which was acquired by Enterprise Investors through its Polish Enterprise Fund V in 2006 for EUR35 million. The acquisition will make Macon the leading building materials producer in Romania.

"Nexxus Launches Genomma IPO on Mexican Exchange" (Latin America and the Caribbean)
Latin American Venture Capital Association (07/24/08)

Mexico-based private equity firm Nexxus Capital has divested part of its stake in Genomma Lab Internacional of Mexico through the placement of shares on the Mexican Stock Exchange. Nexxus acquired a "strategic position" in Genomma in May 2004. Following the offering, Nexxus holds a 21.8 percent stake in Genomma.
