Ukrainian cable company Volia Cable has agreed to merge with the Oisiw group of regional cable networks owned by private equity firm SigmaBleyzer, which created Volia through the consolidation of three separate companies acquired in 1999 and 2000. The merger will create Ukraine's largest multi-service cable operator. Meanwhile, US-based Providence Equity Partners will boost its total investment in Volia to over US$300 million. Providence invested about US$200 million in Volia late last year. Separately, UFG Private Equity I has acquired a controlling stake in Industrial Media Network, a Ukraine-based broadband Internet service provider that operates under the name IPNet.

"Actis to Put US$48.5 Million in Egypt's Mo'men"

Private equity firm Actis has agreed to invest US$48.5 million in Mo'men Group, operator of the largest independent chain of fast food restaurants in Egypt. Mo'men, which also sells frozen food under the brand name Three Chefs, has a presence in Sudan and Libya and plans to use the investment to expand its operations in North Africa and into the Gulf region.

"Swicorp Takes Majority Stake in Middle East Drilling Rig Firm"

Saudi Arabia-based private equity firm Swicorp Joussour has acquired a 51 percent stake in Mosvold Middle East Jackup, a mobile offshore drilling rig company focused on drilling in the Persian Gulf. Mosvold currently has contracts for the construction of two jackup rigs and an option to acquire two more.

"CDC Pledges US$105 Million to Chinese Funds"

U.K.-based CDC Group has committed a total of US$105 million to four private equity funds focused on investments in China. The pledge raises CDC's overall commitment to China-focused private equity funds to US$640 million. The four funds—Tripod Capital China Fund II, Qiming Venture Partners II, FountainVest China Growth Fund and Legend Capital IV—are raising a total of US$1.7 billion.

"BNDES Launches Private Investment Program"

Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) will create a BRL1.5 billion (US$964 million) program aimed at supporting local businesses in key sectors. Under the plan, the bank will invest in up to 10 private equity and venture capital funds, beginning with those focused on agribusiness and ethanol/biomass generation. The first funds will be selected by November.

"Marfin Buys Sunce Koncen Stake"

Greece-based buyout firm Marfin Investment Group has acquired a 50 percent stake in Croatian tourism group Sunce Koncen for EUR90 million. Sunce operates 11 hotels along the Adriatic coast and has a majority stake in a local airport. Under the terms of the transaction, Marfin Investment reserves the right to acquire another 25 percent stake in Sunce Koncen for EUR45 million within the next two years.

"6 New Startup Venture Capital Funds in Singapore to Be Seeded"

Singapore's National Research Foundation (NRF) announced that it will seed six new venture capital funds to promote investment in local startups. NRF will provide each fund S$10 million (US$7.4 million). The fund managers—including Raffles Venture Partners, Tamarix Capital and Walden International—will be required to raise matching commitments from third party investors.
