The investment was made through the Aureos Colombia Fund, which held its first closing recently with US$35.8 million in commitments. Return to Headlines "Actis Buys Majority Stake in Beijing Hot Pot Company" (Asia) Guardian Unlimited (UK) (11/11/08) Private equity firm Actis has acquired a majority stake in Chinese hot pot chain Xiabu Xiabu for US$50 million. Xiabu operates 53 outlets in Beijing and aims to reach 60 by the end of 2008. Return to Headlines "Mid-market Private Equity Firm Horizon Closes US$390 Million Private Equity Fund" (Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States) AltAssets.com (11/10/08) Horizon Capital has closed its latest fund, Emerging Europe Growth Fund II, with total capital commitments of US$390 million, above the fund's US$300 million target. The fund will make investments in midsize businesses in the Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus. Return to Headlines "NBK Capital Invests in Kuwaiti Technology Firm Zak Solutions " (Middle East) Zawya.com (11/10/08) NBK Capital has acquired a 27 percent stake in Zak Solutions, a Kuwait-based IT solutions provider. The investment was made through the Kuwait Investment Opportunities Fund. The value of the deal was not disclosed. Return to Headlines "Franklin Templeton's PE Arm Raises US$147 Million" (Asia) FINalternatives.com (11/07/08) Darby Overseas Investments, the private equity arm of Franklin Templeton Investments, has raised US$147 million for the Franklin Templeton Private Equity Strategy Fund. The fund will invest in midsize unlisted companies in India. Return to Headlines "Enterprise Investors Buys 42 Percent of Kofola-Hoop" (Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States) Prague Daily Monitor (11/13/08) Poland-based private equity firm Enterprise Investors has acquired a 42 percent stake in Czech-Polish beverage group Kofola-Hoop for approximately EUR135 million. The acquisition was made through Polish Enterprise Fund VI. Return to Headlines "Euromena Invests US$6 Million in Chedid Capital Holding" (Middle East) CPI Financial (11/13/08) Capital Trust Group has invested US$6 million in Chedid Capital Holding, a Lebanon-based insurance and reinsurance brokerage company. The investment was made through the EuroMena Fund, which focuses on investments in the Middle East and North Africa. Return to Headlines "Vital Renewable Energy Secures Funding From International Investors Led by Paladin Capital Group " (Latin America and the Caribbean) PRNewswire (11/10/08) Brazil-based startup Vital Renewable Energy Company (VREC) has received more than US$1 billion from an international consortium of investors led by US-based private equity firm Paladin Capital Group. Among the other investors are Leaf Clean Energy Company, Petercam Asset Management and PCG Clean Energy & Technology Fund. VREC will use the funding to invest in new projects in Brazil related to ethanol and energy generation or acquire existing facilities. Return to Headlines "Doosan Sells Packaging Unit" (Asia) Trading Markets (11/14/08) Private equity firm MBK Partners will acquire a 100 percent stake in Doosan Techpack, the packaging unit of South Korea-based Doosan Corporation, for US$287 million. MBK Partners has offices in Hong Kong, Seoul and Shanghai. Return to Headlines "Investment Firm Takes Control of Primedia" (Africa) Reuters (11/13/08) South Africa-based Mineworkers Investment Company (MIC) has raised its stake in South African media company Primedia from 32 percent to 49 percent in a deal valued at US$24 million. The transaction gives MIC operational control of Primedia, which owns several radio stations and the biggest cinema chain in South Africa. Primedia was delisted in September 2007 after being bought out by management, MIC and private equity firm Brait, which owns a 19 percent stake in the company. Return to Headlines "Bright Start Buys Stake in Dubai Contracting Company From Amwal AlKhaleej" (Middle East) Zawya.com (11/10/08) UAE-based holding company Bright Start has acquired a stake in Dubai Contracting Company (DCC) from Saudi Arabia-based private equity firm Amwal AlKhaleej. The details of the transaction were not disclosed. Amwal AlKhaleej purchased a 49 percent stake in DCC in November 2007. Return to Headlines "European Islamic Investment Bank Makes Private Equity Investment in DiamondCorp" (Africa) London Stock Exchange (11/10/08) Private Equity and Corporate Advisory, the private equity unit of the European Islamic Investment Bank (EIIB), has invested GBP1.8 million in DiamondCorp, a South Africa-based diamond mining company. EIIB launched Private Equity and Corporate Advisory in April 2008 to focus on Sharia'a compliant investments in the Middle East, Africa and Europe. Return to Headlines "iEurope Sells Its Stake in Slovenian Innovations Leader" (Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States) PRNewswire (10/14/08) Private equity firm iEurope Capital's iEurope Fund has sold its stake in ATech elektronika, a designer and manufacturer of proprietary electronics assemblies based in Slovenia.
