"Aureos Completes First Investment in Colombia" (Latin America and the Caribbean)

Aureos Capital has completed its first investment in Colombia, teaming up with one of its portfolio companies, Arrendadora ARG, a Nicaragua-based financial leasing company, to back the management buyout of vehicle and machinery rental company Rentandes. The investment was made through the Aureos Colombia Fund, which held its first closing recently with US$35.8 million in commitments.

Private equity firm Actis has acquired a majority stake in Chinese hot pot chain Xiabu Xiabu for US$50 million. Xiabu operates 53 outlets in Beijing and aims to reach 60 by the end of 2008.

Brazil-based startup Vital Renewable Energy Company (VREC) has received more than US$1 billion from an international consortium of investors led by US-based private equity firm Paladin Capital Group. Among the other investors are Leaf Clean Energy Company, Petercam Asset Management and PCG Clean Energy & Technology Fund. VREC will use the funding to invest in new projects in Brazil related to ethanol and energy generation or acquire existing facilities.

"Investment Firm Takes Control of Primedia" (Africa)

South Africa-based Mineworkers Investment Company (MIC) has raised its stake in South African media company Primedia from 32 percent to 49 percent in a deal valued at US$24 million. The transaction gives MIC operational control of Primedia, which owns several radio stations and the biggest cinema chain in South Africa. Primedia was delisted in September 2007 after being bought out by management, MIC and private equity firm Brait, which owns a 19 percent stake in the company.

"Bright Start Buys Stake in Dubai Contracting Company From Amwal AlKhaleej" (Middle East)

UAE-based holding company Bright Start has acquired a stake in Dubai Contracting Company (DCC) from Saudi Arabia-based private equity firm Amwal AlKhaleej. The details of the transaction were not disclosed. Amwal AlKhaleej purchased a 49 percent stake in DCC in November 2007.

Private Equity and Corporate Advisory, the private equity unit of the European Islamic Investment Bank (EIIB), has invested GBP1.8 million in DiamondCorp, a South Africa-based diamond mining company. EIIB launched Private Equity and Corporate Advisory in April 2008 to focus on Sharia'a compliant investments in the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

Private equity firm iEurope Capital's iEurope Fund has sold its stake in ATech elektronika, a designer and manufacturer of proprietary electronics assemblies based in Slovenia. The transaction generated a gross internal rate of return of approximately 18 percent.
