"Abu Dhabi Private Equity Fund to Acquire OrasInvest" (Africa)

ADIC PE Management, the private equity arm of Abu Dhabi Investment Company (ADIC), has agreed together with other investors to acquire OrasInvest, a telecom support company based in Egypt, in a leveraged buyout valued at US$180 million. ADIC PE's investment will be made through the US$500 million ADIC MENA Partners Fund.

"China-focused Fund Raises Nearly US$1 Billion Despite Slowdown" (Asia)

China-focused private equity firm FountainVest has closed its first fund with US$950 million in commitments. The fund will invest in midsize companies in mainland China, focusing on emerging businesses driving or benefiting from domestic consumption and urbanization.

"Franklin Templeton Launches New MENA Fund" (Middle East)

Franklin Templeton Investments has launched the Franklin MENA Fund, which will invest in companies in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Egypt, Jordan and Morocco. Dubai-based asset manager Algebra Capital will act as sub-advisor to the fund. Franklin Templeton Investments acquired a 25 percent stake in Algebra Capital in August 2007. No details were given concerning the fund's target size.

"Black River Invests Significant Sum in Joint Venture With White Energy in Africa" (Africa)
PRNewswire (11/10/08)

Private equity firm Black River Asset Management, a subsidiary of Cargill, has invested US$70 million to acquire a 49 percent stake in a special purpose company to be established under a joint venture with White Energy, the exclusive worldwide license holder of the Binderless Coal Briquetting process that significantly increases the energy efficiency of low-grade coal. The joint venture will seek to commercialize the technology for use throughout Africa.

Lathe Investment, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Government of Singapore Investment Corporation Ventures (GIC Ventures), will acquire a 9.9 percent stake in Arcil, an India-based asset reconstruction firm. The deal is valued at approximately US$55 million.

Delta Private Equity Partners is raising a new fund to invest in small and midsize Russian companies. The fund is targeting total commitments of US$500 million. Delta to date has invested in a total of 55 Russian companies through the US Russia Investment Fund, a US government-backed vehicle created in 1995 to stimulate private business, and the US$120 million Delta Russia Fund established in 2004.
