"Aureos Backs Central American Advertising" (Latin America and the Caribbean)
Private Equity Online (12/16/08)

Private equity firm Aureos Capital has invested an undisclosed amount in outdoor advertising company Publimovil Costa Rica. The investment was made through the US$21 million Emerge Central America Growth Fund, which targets investments in small and midsize companies in Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Belize and the Dominican Republic. Also this month, Aureos completed a US$5.6 million investment in Thai shipbuilding company Marsun through the Aureos South-East Asia Fund.

"Enterprise Investors Backs Dystrybucja Polska" (Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States)
Private Equity Europe (12/15/08)

Poland-based private equity firm Enterprise Investors will acquire a 30 percent stake in direct mail distributor Dystrybucja Polska (Polish Distribution) for approximately EUR1.5 million. The investment is the first made through Enterprise's initial venture capital fund, the EUR100 million Enterprise Venture Fund I (EVF I).

"IDFC Invests in Deepak Cables" (Asia)

India-based IDFC Private Equity and UTI Ventures have acquired a 26 percent stake in Deepak Cables, an India-based manufacturer of overhead aluminum conductors for the power transmission and distribution industry, for a total of approximately US$58 million. IDFC's investment of US$41 million was made through the US$700 million IDFC Fund III.

"Conduit Capital Completes Sale of Natural Gas Compression Facility and Pipeline in Mexico" (Latin America and the Caribbean)

US-based private equity firm Conduit Capital Partners has sold the Libramiento natural gas compression facility and an associated 65-kilometer natural gas pipeline in Mexico to global power generation firm InterGen for US$89.2 million. Conduit's investment in the Libramiento natural gas facility and pipeline was made in 2005 through the US$393 million Latin Power III.

"Balkan Accession Fund Acquires Romania's Frigotehnica for EUR25 Million" (Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States)

The Balkan Accession Fund (BAF) has acquired a 99 percent stake in Romania-based refrigerating equipment maker Frigotehnica for EUR25 million. BAF is managed by the Balkan Accession Management Company, which was founded in 2005 as a joint venture between the Romanian-American Enterprise Fund and the Bulgarian-American Enterprise Fund.

Russia-based Icon Private Equity has acquired a 72 percent stake in WiMAX operator Ukrainian High Technologies. The deal is valued at approximately US$100 million.

"Abu Dhabi Commercial, Macquarie Form US$1 Billion Fund" (Middle East)
Bloomberg (12/16/08) Sharif, Arif

Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) and Australia-based Macquarie Group have raised US$630 million for the ADCB Macquarie Infrastructure Fund, which will primarily invest in infrastructure projects in the six Gulf Arab countries, though it will have a mandate to seek additional opportunities in the rest of the Middle East as well as North Africa. The fund is targeting up to US$1 billion in commitments.

"HSBC Raises US$1.5 Billion Asia Private Equity Fund" (Asia)

Hong Kong-based HSBC Private Equity (Asia) has closed its Private Equity Fund 6 with US$1.5 billion in commitments, exceeding the original target of US$1.25 billion. The Asia-dedicated fund has made three investments thus far. Earlier in December, private equity firm CCMP Capital Asia announced that it had raised US$1.2 billion for its third buyout fund.

Qatar-based bank QInvest is set to launch a private equity fund that will seek investment opportunities in its geographical areas of focus—the Middle East, Africa, South Asia, Turkey, Malaysia and Indonesia. The fund will target commitments totaling US$250 million.

"GEEREF to Invest in Projects in Africa" (Africa)
eGov Monitor (12/12/08)

The Global Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Fund (GEEREF), established by the European Commission to provide clean energy to emerging markets, will invest EUR22 million in small-scale renewable energy projects in Sub-Saharan Africa as well as in Asia. The investment will be made through commitments to commercial renewable energy funds specifically targeting those regions. GEEREF is managed by the European Investment Fund and the European Investment Bank and has thus far raised approximately EUR110 million in commitments from the European Commission, Germany and Norway.
