Responsible Investment in Emerging Markets PE: Is Now the Time for ESG Standards?

From project finance to real estate development to public equities, investors are increasingly paying attention to a host of issues broadly categorized as ESG (Environment, Social, Governance). As the importance of extra-financial considerations has grown, so has the adoption of frameworks aimed at helping investors tackle ESG issues. To date, these initiatives have focused primarily on public equities and project finance, but efforts are underway to explore whether, and if so how, ESG guidelines can be applied to private equity.

Such efforts face clear challenges in adapting frameworks built for other asset classes. Nonetheless, a number of pioneering LPs and private equity firms are demonstrating the benefits of more programmatic treatment of extra-financial issues through both cost savings and value creation. It’s unclear whether the private equity industry will end up with new standards specific to ESG, or whether existing efforts to incorporate ESG issues will simply gain sharper attention. Whatever the outcome, private equity investors in emerging markets seem poised to gain from growing interest in responsible investment.

Paving the Way in Other Asset Classes
The concept of Responsible Investment (RI), which refers to the incorporation of ESG issues into the investment process, has taken off in the public equities space. According to the Social Investment Forum, the Responsible Investment industry’s association, an estimated one of every nine dollars under professional management in the United States is involved in RI.

A number of frameworks have emerged to assist asset owners and managers in integrating extra-financial considerations into their investment policies. One example growing widely in acceptance is the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (UNPRI). This global effort, backed by UNEP-FI (a partnership between the United Nations Environmental Programme and financial institutions), has to date enlisted participation from over 400 institutions in banking, asset management, insurance and private equity.
